A Brief Introduction
The concept of Students Quality Circles (SQCs) is derived from Quality Control Circles (QCCs) which were developed in
In the early '90s, the educationists realized that it was very difficult to teach problem solving techniques to adults, working in professional institutions because they had a fixed mindset. The better option was to follow the policy of 'catching them young' and making them use the scientific tools and techniques when they are in Middle and High Schools so that they are better workers and professionals later on whatever career they follow. Thus, the educationists applied this concept of Students Quality Circles in schools and were amazed to see the potential for students' growth hidden in this activity.
It was due to the hard work of renowned educationists that this participative and win-all concept of QCCs made its entry in academics. The concept of SQCs picked up momentum in thousands of schools across SAARC countries,
The educationists are of the opinion that this scientific approach to solve problems is very important to bring in quality in the lives of young people.

Conventions of Bangladesh, Nepal, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Iran and India.
STUDENTS QUALITY CIRCLES
What They Are And How They Work:
a. Definition
A Students Quality Circle (SQC) is a group of 4 to 10 volunteer students who meet at regular intervals for a specific duration in the presence of a facilitator to use scientific methods to identify, analyze and solve the problems they are facing at school or home.
b. Systematic Problem Solving
Below is enlisted the step-wise procedure that a Students Quality Circle adopts to solve a problem:
- Problem Identification
- Observation of the Features of the Problem
- Analysis of the causes
- Identification & Implementation of the Countermeasures
- Checking the Effectiveness
- Reviewing the Effectiveness of the Solutions Applied over a Period
- Standardization and Generalization of Solution
c. Characteristics of Problem Solving Tools
- Simple: Everyone can construct and interpret them
- Visuals: Aesthetically pleasing and easily quantifiable
d. List of 7 Problem Solving Tools:
- Check sheets
- Graphs/Charts
- Pareto Analysis
- Cause & Effect Analysis
- Histogram
- Control Charts
- Scatter Diagram or Regression Analysis
e. The Responsibility of a School to Introduce the Concept of SQCs
- Initiation
- Training & Education (Facilitator and Students)
- Recognition
- Motivation
f. Take Off for SQC
- Train facilitators about SQCs and the use the seven basic Problem Solving Tools.
- Use the book “Guide to Students Quality Circles”
- Ask for volunteer students to form SQCs
- Explain about SQCs to these volunteer students
- Provide venue within school premises for meeting (own class/library/laboratory, etc)
- Decide meeting days and time (during school hours) for SQCs
- Guide students on the principles as a facilitator rather than participate or lead.
- Let the students take the lead
